Copy-Pasted from http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/24/talula_ruling/ :

An NZ judge has done the decent thing and made a nine-year-old girl a ward of court to allow her to ditch what must rate among the most preposterous names of all time - Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii.

A Swedish couple is battling the country's National Tax Authority for the right to call their daughter "Metallica", the BBC reports.

In Sweden, both first names and surnames have to be officially approved. On the banned list are "offensive, unsuitable or inappropriate" titles, as well as those which might "cause discomfort for the one using it".

Heath and Deborah Campbell were furious when their local baker in New Jersey refused to decorate a birthday cake with the name of their baby boy.

But ShopRite, in Holland Township, ignored the parents' pleas after concluding that "Happy Birthday Adolf Hitler" was an inappropriate use of icing sugar.

In the proud tradition of naming one's offspring after entire football teams, or a favourite brand of supercar, one US dad has decided to name his son after a software upgrade.

Jon Blake Cusack and wife Jamie, of Holland, Michigan, will certainly be spending many a sleepless night debugging little Jon Blake Cusack Version 2.0 and - in about 16 years' time - having a very hard time explaining to their unfortunate offspring whose bright idea this was in the first place.

I wonder about these idiots and what could be going through their heads. Sticking a stupid name on a child should be considered abuse.

I agree.

I dunno if there are any laws against it in the UK, but in some countries, names have to be approved for that very reason

Hey-ya Joygant. Welcome to the BGB.

Smile

Some of the names you have listed are not so bad, Kitty, Rose Ivy (though not the best when put together), and Skye.. I know people with those names. And a few of the others are unusual spellings of known names.. 'Khrystyne' for example. I have a cousin named 'Moneeka' (Monica), and she has sisters Rachanna and Kashnee, both of which are hybrid names.

Though I have to agree with Shanetris, Quanyshia, Deshontay and the such. Strange to say the least.

Hello Joy!

Good to see you here, as I'm off facebook for the foreseeable future.

Those spellings ugh... Why doesn't the registrar tell them they are spelt wrong?

I remember coming across someone called "Richard Head"

A bloke I used to work with is called "Ken Wood"

And my ex-neighbour who was a lawyer is called "Ivor price"

My mum used to know a 'Theresa Green", but she got that unfortunate combination through marriage

Isn't that just like a everyday Hillybilly girl name, like which: "Miss Kitty Rose Ivy do ya mean, the one with the ferrets or the one with the still?"

I've always been told there are no 'correct' spellings for names, there are traditional spellings and common/recognised spellings, but not a correct one. A name is simply something to distinguish you from someone else, and it can be whatever your parents, or you if you chose to change it, be, no matter how strange it may seem.

I agree with that to an extent Todge. But some of the ones quoted are not 'intended variances' but just typos, surely?

I know someone called Jaimes.

They didn't realise they spelt his name wrong until it was too late!

True, you'd think that if a strange name or an unusual spelling was submitted, it would be queried, just to make sure.
